Weis’ “The New Gold Standard”

If you are familiar with the University of Notre Dame’s head coach Charlie Weis, then you are probably aware that he wrote a book about his first few seasons coaching at Notre Dame. The book is called “The New Gold Standard: Charlie Weis and Notre Dame’s Rise to Glory.” For fans of Notre Dame, there is no better read than one that talks about how good the teams is, the optimistic representation of where they are going to go in the future, and how the Irish have struggled in the past to get where they are today.

Of course, if you read the reviews, you will see that many people, especially those who are not fans of the Fighting Irish, do not consider “glory” to be an accurate description of where the Irish are right now. You can pick up the book in most of the bid bookstore chains or at an online site, such as Amazon.com, eBay, or even the Notre Dame website. Coach’s Poll Out

The Preseason USA Today Coach’s Top 25 Poll was released on the third of this month, so you can check out which NCAA football teams are expected to be the best this season. As you might have guessed, the USC Trojans made the top of this respected poll, as well as several other polls this preseason. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will play the Trojans this upcoming season, as well as several other teams on the list, including Penn State, UCLA and Michigan.

If you are a fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, you might be a little disappointed. The Irish did not end up making the top 25, though they did receive mention as getting 91 votes, and likely would have been included in a list of the top 30 or 35 teams in the nation. Of course, the Irish have their share of question marks this season, including the current quarterback situation; however, questions can be answered emphatically, and the Irish believe that by the end of the season a ranking in the top 10 isn’t too far out of the range of possibilities.

Predicting the Independents

As you probably know, the Fighting Irish are an “Independent” college football team, meaning that they do not have an official conference. This can be a good thing, as teams with specific conferences often find that they can be restricting, especially when putting together a schedule. For a team that attracts such a broad base of support from around the nation, being independent and having a lot of freedom with regard to your schedule is a good thing. The negative side of the Independent status comes when bloggers have to rank NCAA football conferences. The Independents are only four teams, so they become an ad hoc group for this purpose.

CBS Sportsline has the Irish getting the better of a hypothetical Independents season ending standings chart. They predict that the Irish could go 8-4 at best, with tight end John Carlson being the “conference” MVP. Even though Coach Weis doesn’t like to use the word “rebuilding,” that’s pretty much what the Irish will be doing this year. A bowl game awaits, and so do some very good recruits for next season. Navy, with its strong running game, will be right behind the Irish, followed by Army and Western Kentucky.

Singing the Praises of UND.com

UND.com’s new format has found one adamant fan right here. Their new format and dedication to multimedia content is something that ought to be applauded. Make sure to take a look at the new videos that they post on the website almost daily. Practice has only been going on for about a week, but there are already tons of videos of the athletes going through drills. In addition, the press conferences of the coaches are also being posted. With UND.com, it has never been easier to be a well-informed fan of the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

The video up today will show some of the usual drills that football players go through day-to-day. Some of the best footage is probably the stuff where the quarterback prospects are practicing holding onto the ball while players attempt to slap the pigskin out of their hands with pads. There was also an open scrimmage yesterday, and you can see the highlights by signing up and looking at the archived content. There will not be many other opportunities to see the Irish in practice live, as the practices are usually closed to the public.

Fan Appreciation Day at Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame has announced that Fan Appreciation Day will be set for Saturday, August 11th. If you would like to catch the only live practice this season open to the public, then you should get to Notre Dame Stadium before the gates open at 8:30 this Saturday. You can see the three potential QB’s try out their arms perhaps, or see other position battles on a team filled with question marks. The Irish will practice from 9:00 to 11:30, so long as the weather holds.

Some things about the practice might not be the most conducive to getting the stadium filled with fans. For one, there will be no tailgating permitted either before or after the game, which is a real bummer. You also can’t bring alcoholic beverages into the stadium, and the concession stands will not be open. This, clearly, will not be something that the boozers will want to see, but it might be interesting for people who are really into getting an idea about who will become a starter this season. The good thing about it is that Fan Appreciation Day is free, with general admission tickets being issued on a first come, first serve basis.

It’s Hard Being Jimmy Clausen

There was an article at the ESPN website that talked about the hardest jobs in college football today. You might not be surprised to find out that one of the top ten most difficult jobs, according to Bruce Feldman, is being Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Jimmy Clausen. Feldman admits that part of why Clausen has such a hard job is because of his own actions—hyping himself up with extravagant press conferences, bragging about his high school accomplishments and the like.

Of course, Jimmy Clausen has also walked into a tough situation. Even if he beats out the other two QB prospects he will have to live up to one of the biggest expectation levels in college football ever. Brady Quinn’s shoes are large and hard to fill, there aren’t many experienced receivers to throw to, the Irish have a tough schedule, and the media is going to be scrutinizing his every move. If he has anything less than a spectacular career, one which includes a national title or a Heisman trophy, then he might be considered a failure.

Notre Dame “Not Hot” to ESPN

ESPN.com has a “Hot or Not” list that was recently written by Mark Schlabach. It will be disappointing for fans of Notre Dame Football to see that the Fighting Irish made the “Not” list right off the bat. You won’t have to scroll down too far to find that USC made the hot list, and UND made the opposite side. Schlabach states that the Irish will have a tough time this season as they will be without Brady Quinn and Jeff Samardzija. A lot of their defense has left as well. It is true, as well, that the Irish will have a rough schedule to deal with all season long.

But what’s with all of the Notre Dame bashing? I think in this case it is undeserved. The Irish definitely have a difficult season ahead of them, but the fact that they have a tough schedule shouldn’t be a reason that they aren’t hot. That should be a reason for why they are a good team to watch this year- even despite the fact that they are missing key players on offense and defense.

Notre Dame All-Access

As you might have heard the Fighting Irish have a new website up and running. You can catch a free preview of the Notre Dam “All-Access” broadband channel at UND.com. This service will allow you to go inside the practices, get unique player and coach interviews, plus more in depth analysis of all that is Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football. If this seems like a good idea to you, then you should visit the site more regularly.

Today’s “All-Access” is an introduction to the feature, which gives you some video clips of the various workouts that the ream is going through in preparation for the season. You can see Coach Charlie Weis strolling around as the players run through drills, stretch and listen to instructions. You can even see Weis talking to the three QB prospects at one point. The players are practicing at their indoor facility because there is a heat advisory warning in Indiana right now. This is a pretty good look at what it is like to be a part of a Notre Dame practice.

Weis’ Expectations High

You can check out the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish head football coach, Charlie Weis, at a news conference at both ESPN and the newly improved Notre Dame Athletics website, UND.com. There aren’t any real surprises with this video. It seems to be a pretty standard conference for the head coach of one of the nation’s top programs. He talks about the need for his players to buy into his system, the challenges his team will face when it comes to usurping the media’s image of the team, as well as his own personal expectations, which are nothing short of a chance to win the national championship.

You can also catch some other press conference speeches at the Notre Dame site. Some of the other people who will speak include players John Carlson, Maurice Crum, Jr., Travis Thomas and Tom Zbikowski, as well as some of the players’ leadership personnel, including Trevor Laws, Geoff Price and John Sullivan. It’s Media Day at Notre Dame, so get into it, as the 2007 NCAA football season officially kicks off! Today is also the first day of practice, so it is a very exciting time to be a fan of Notre Dame sports.
