The University of Notre Dame soccer team has been ranked as the 11th best team in the nation entering the 2007-08 season of play. The rankings were compiled by the College Soccer News, a magazine that covers collegiate soccer. It is the opinion of the CSN that the Irish will be deep, with experienced players at all positions. They also mention that the head coach, Bobby Clark has been doing wonderful things, and that as a whole, the program is on the rise. Last year the team finished with a 15-6-2 record, ending in the NCAA Soccer Tournament in the Elite Eight. Before that, they had ended in the round of 16 in 2003 and 2005.
There are some great student-athletes out there to watch this year. Among the Irish players mentioned by name in the article are Joe Lapira, Cory Rellas, Kurt Martin, Bright Dike, Matt Besler, Jack Traynor, Ryan Miller, Andrew Benton, and goalie Chris Cahill. The number one team in the nation as ranked in the pre season poll is UCLA, which will be the first game of the season. UCLA is a traditional rival of Notre Dame, so this soccer match ought to really be good. That game will be in nearby Bloomington, Indiana.

The University of Notre Dame and the University of Michigan have agreed to a contract that will insure that the two programs get to play each other every year during the regular season until the year 2031. The Wolverines and the Irish are the two most storied college football programs, as they are the all-time winning percentage leaders (Michigan is .745 and Notre Dame is .744). Everybody seems to be happy that these two rivals will be able to continue a regular feud that is one of the best in sports. Said Notre Dame athletic director Kevin White, “The Notre Dame-Michigan game has been a red-letter date on the football schedule for a long time, so it made perfect sense to make certain the rivalry continues annually long into the future.”
Of course by 2031 most sports will be played in a different reality, mostly generated on palm-sized computers, or within our minds, each one tailored to our own personal algorithms in order to get the most out of the rivalry. Or it will take place in space… but it might be because we are all in space. Either way, it is good news to everybody who would like to get to see a great rivalry game in the distant future.
