We’re in the full swing of things for UCLA Week, as they call it. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are preparing to take on one of the best teams in the Pac-10, and the Irish are desperate for a win. They will have to do it on the road in Pasadena, California, though, and with a lot of doubters saying that they will go 0-8 before too long. As for the quarterback situation, which is usually at the forefront of people’s minds, Jimmy Clausen has been taking snaps in practice, and has been looking pretty good. You can watch a video of him throwing a few passes at UND.com. Coach Weis has stated that if Jimmy is at full strength he will be the starter for the game this Saturday.
There is also a nice interview available at Notre Dame’s website that features the three offensive captains, John Carlson, John Sullivan and Travis Thomas. They talk about the upcoming game, the pressure, Coach Weis, and a lot of other stuff. It’s pretty interesting if you are a Notre Dame football geek. But then who isn’t?

Now that the sting of defeat has worn off from the Perdue game, we can get back to the task at hand, which is preparing for UCLA this upcoming Saturday night. UCLA is not ranked in the AP Poll, but they did receive 49 votes for the latest edition of the poll, which is notable for having dropped USC from the No. 1 spot in favor of LSU, the previous No. 2. But I digress. The Irish will have a tough game on their hands very shortly here, but there is one lingering question that must be answered before game time: Who will be the starting quarterback for Notre Dame?
Jimmy Clausen and Evan Sharpley both had very good games, both provided offensive sparks, and even Charlie Weis said in a recent interview that they were both much better at running the offense. The problem is that Clausen injured his hip during the game, and we are still waiting for word as to his current condition. Until then, we have ourselves another Notre Dame quarterback controversy! It seems like only a few weeks ago we were in this very same position, but now here we are again. This time it should be easier to pick a QB, though, as the pool is only two deep.

The University of Notre Dame football team finally started paying like it could win a football game this past Saturday. It was a shame, however, that it happened in the second half of their latest game versus Perdue, after the Boilermakers had already scored 23 unanswered points in the first half. The Fighting Irish after the halftime break were a different team than we had seen in any of their previous four games. They scored three touchdowns, came up big when they needed to make plays, and even held their opponents to just 10 points. For a while, even, it was within the realm of possibilities that the Irish might be able to pull off an upset. But an untimely interception and a Boilermaker touchdown in the closing minutes of the game sealed the latest loss for Notre Dame.
The Irish are now 0-5, the first time that has happened in their remarkable college football history. Every game they lose is the first time this has happened. The schedule for the Irish does not get much better immediately. They will play UCLA, No. 7 Boston College and No. 1 USC for their next three games. There were definitely positive things to point to in this one, but everybody in Notre Dame fandom is anxious for a real win.
