Preparing for George “By George” Mason

Notre Dame has drawn George Mason in the first round, and if the Irish want to keep dancing past Thursday night, they’ll have to do some scouting. The George Mason Patriots were the darling of the dance a few years ago, but now is a different time, and the Patriots only have a couple of hold-overs from their Cinderella squad. They won the Colonial Athletic Conference title and secured the conference auto bid to get into the Tourney. They finished the season with an overall record of 23-10. To get the in-depth analysis of the Patriots, go to the team scouting page at Basketball-Prospectus.com.

A couple of the things that the Patriots Blog noticed when we began crunching the numbers:

  • Both the Irish and the Patriots are bad at getting turnovers on defense.
  • If it comes down to a free-throw contest, the Irish have a clear advantage.
  • Notre Dame is much better on the glass, especially in offensive rebounding.
  • Notre Dame has a much better outside shooting percentage.
