Notre Dame Easily Advances, Will Face Washington St. in Second Round

Before the Notre Dame game started last night the second round opponent for the winner of the contest had been decided. Washington State had beaten Winthrop in an earlier game, so the winner of the UND-George Mason game knew they would face the Wazzu in the second round. The Irish kept their eyes on the prize, though, and easily defeated the George Mason Patriots 68-50. It wasn’t a particularly good offensive game for the Irish, but they were effective at holding Patriots down, and a win is a win right now. There is little time to reminisce or to celebrate. There is much work to be done before the Irish are to face the No. 4 seed Washington State Cougars.

Everybody expects that this will be a good game, a much closer contest than the George Mason game. Wash St. has some experienced guards who have won big games in the Tourney before. They finished 3rd overall in the Pac-10 standings, with an overall record of 25-8. The Cougars have beaten tournament teams like Baylor, Gonzaga, Portland St., USC and Oregon.
