The storyline for the summer has been set at Notre Dame. No longer are we worried about what quarterback will start on day one (as Jimmy Clausen seems to have wrapped up the gig by now), and no longer are we worried about whether Charlie Weis will be back for the near future (as his job seems to be secure at least through the next successful season). No. The story this summer is the search for the new Athletic Director following the departure of Kevin White, who was hired by Duke just a few weeks ago.
Picking a new Athletic Director for the University of Notre Dame is no easy task. The AD job in South Bend is perhaps the most sought-after and prestigious in the country. Almost any other AD job is a step down. Notre Dame’s athletic budget, which was appraised at about $44.5 million last year, is at his disposal. And unlike other AD jobs around the nation, he or she won’t be worried about buying a new set of starting blocks for the swim team. Little things like that are for the interns. Te new AD will instead set the larger priorities, like deciding the football schedule, setting new media deals and hiring the most scrutinized coach in the nation. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it.
