Notre Dame beat Navy this past Saturday, giving the Fighting Irish their sixth win of the season- enough to become eligible for a postseason bowl game. Notre Dame barely held on to win the game, as a furious Navy fourth quarter rally by the Midshipmen fell just short. In fact, at one early point in the fourth quarter the Fighting Irish were ahead of the Midshipmen by a score of 27-7, but Navy scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to bring the final score to 27-21. Navy won an on-side kick to get their final touchdown, and then with just about a minute remaining they recovered another on-side kick. The Notre Dame defense came up with a sack and then forced the Midshipmen into a bad pass to end the game with the win.
Charlie Weis had been rumored to be on the hot seat this season, despite the news this past week that his job was not supposed to be on the line, according to the new athletic director at Notre Dame. The win, despite the fact that it got tense at the end, will probably do a lot to help Charlie Weis keep his job as head coach. The Irish will get to a bowl game this season, and the dramatic improvement from last year is plainly obvious.
