Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis has decided that he will call the offensive plays from here on out, until the end of the season. Weis, a former offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots during their Super Bowl days, used to call the plays for the team (and did last season), but decided to cede the responsibility to his offensive coordinator at UND, Mike Haywood, so that he could focus more on the team as a whole. It was thought that calling the plays was taking up too much of Weis’ focus while on the sideline. With Haywood missing time due to personal reasons, Weis is grabbing the clipboard. According to a ChicagoTribune.com article about the matter, Weis said:
“As far as play-calling goes, this week, Mike Haywood is going to be missing some practice for personal reasons. I support these personal reasons…That being said, (since this is) followed up by a short week next week, for the rest of the regular season I’ll be handling the play-calling on offense.”
