Notre Dame was beaten 67-59 by Penn State in the NIT last night, sending the Fighting Irish home packing without a shot at the championship game. UND got behind early, and took a 18-31 halftime deficit into the locker room. Despite a valiant comeback attempt, the Nittany Lions were able to hold on and get the win before a large crowd at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Luke Harangody had 17 points and 10 rebounds, another double-double to close out his season. No other Irish player reached double digits in the points column. Notre Dame shot 33.3% from the field, whereas the Lions shot 44.6%, despite some terrible free throw shooting. For Penn State, Taylor Battle had a nice game, ending the evening with 17 points, five rebounds and five assists.
So where do we go from here, Irish fans? Well, for basketball junkies, the waiting begins. There’s always next year, as they say. You can enjoy the final matchup in the NIT, and then watch the Final Four in the Tourney this weekend and imagine the Irish in there next year.
