Big news for the Notre Dame Men’s Soccer team: The Irish just landed the Gatorade National Player of the Year, Dillon Powers. A Plano, Texas native, Powers is considered to be one of the top recruits by experts, and recently won the country’s top honor in high school soccer. The Gatorade National Player of the Year Award is similar to the Heisman, the Naismith or the NBA MVP award. Considering the number of high school soccer players there are, it’s an honor to even me nominated. According to the UND.com article about this, the North Texas State Soccer Olympic Development Program Director of Coaching
Gary Williamson had this to say about Dillon Powers:
“Dillon is very quiet, very unassuming, very shy off the field, but on the field, he’s an impact player. His range of passing and his pass selection is spot on. He can get out of tight spaces. He’s got a very powerful shot. He’s just on a different level. His soccer IQ is up there along with his natural ability. Technically, tactically, physically and mentally, he’s got the edge.”
