Armando Allen, the junior running back/halfback for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, has been listed on the 2009 Doak Walker Award watch list. The Doak Walker Award is presented to the nation’s finest running back– it’s basically the Heisman, but only for running backs. Being named as a candidate is a huge honor, although there are dozens and dozens of potential candidates. Armando appears first on the list because of the spelling of his name.
As you probably know, the Irish have had problems running the ball in recent years. In the transition between Brady Quinn and Jimmy Clausen, the Irish haven’t had a solid running game. This year, with Jimmy coming back from a strong finish to last season, and with the wide receiver corps older and better, the Irish will probably again rely on their passing game more than their running game. But that doesn’t mean that Allen can’t have a good season. He ought to be the go-to guy in short yardage situations, and when the Irish are up big, he should get lots of carries.
