Notre Dame Beats Purdue 24-21

It was a close one, but the Irish pulled it out, beating the Purdue Boilermakers 24-21 this past Saturday! We hope you all had tickets and saw it live, or at least saw it on television. What a finish!  The Irish were down 21-7 after the Purdue Boilermakers scored two consecutive TDs in the fourth quarter. However, with three minutes left Jimmy Clause, who was limping from an injury suffered earlier in the game, sealed the deal with a TD pass to Kyle Randolph, putting the Irish up 24-21 with 25 seconds to go.

Check out the game stats at Sports Illustrated.com.  After all was said and done, Charlie Weis summed up the game like this, according to the AP, via SI.com:

”Last week, the defense made a play at the end of the game. This week, the offense made a play at the end of the game. Would you like the game to be easier than that? Absolutely. But give me a close win any time of the week, I’ll take it.”

Notre Dame-Purdue Preview

You can find all sorts of game previews all over the internet, but the ones you get at UND.com are always the best.  So in the spirit of keeping some tradition around here, let’s give you guys a link to the UND.com game preview for the Sept.  26 matchup between UND and Purdue.

Some of the notes include:

  • Purdue lost 38-21 to the Irish last season on September 27th, 2008.
  • Purdue has a new coach this year, one Danny Hope-let’s HOPE he follows his predecessor’s history against the Irish.
  • Notre Dame has the series lead overall 56-26-2, but don’t let the record fool you. Most of the wins came back during the golden years of Irish domination.
  • Purdue is known as the “Cradle of Quarterbacks,” as several of their past QB’s have gone on to playing the NFL. This year they’re starting Joey Elliot, who is not expected to continue the string of QB legends.

Notre Dame Beats Michigan State 33-30!

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish were able to bury the demons that had haunted them for years this past weekend, finally beating the Michigan State Spartans at Notre Dame Stadium 33-30.  The Irish had not beaten the Spartans in South Bend since 1993. This thrilling win will certainly bode will for the team as a whole, and might give coach Charlie Weis one more accomplishment to add to his long list.

Jimmy Clausen had an amazing game and led the Irish on a winning touchdown drive with a 33-yard pass to Golden Tate. The Irish defense then had to step up to seal the deal, and it couldn’t have come a moment too soon. Kyle McCarthy made a spectacular interception as the Spartans were threatening to make a winning drive of their own. According to the AP (via Sports Illustrated) Coach Charlie Weis had this to say:

”After last week, how bad everybody felt in a very similar situation in the ending of the game, to make a play to change the outcome in favor of us, I’m really, really happy for those kids in there. It’s nice to see how genuinely excited they are. They feel great.”

Let’s Look At Notre Dame Women’s Soccer Team

Yesterday we took a look at the Notre Dame men’s soccer team, so today it makes sense to introduce you to the Women’s squad. If you were familiar with the team last season, you know that the Lady Irish were extremely good- even ranked No. 1 in the nation for some time, largely based on the play of their senior forward, Kerri Hanks. But the Hanks era is over and the Irish are still in good hands.

You should check out the season preview right here in order to get a better idea about the state of the Notre Dame women’s soccer team.  They have already opened up play, and there are several opportunities coming up to see the team in action. Head coach Randy Waldrum summed up the changing nature of the team like this:

“The difference with this year’s team may be the perception outside our program that we won’t have any stars because of the loss of some of the big names like Kerri Hanks, Brittany Bock and Carrie Dew. Within our team, and those that know about our team, they know we have a lot of stars. A few in the soccer community may not realize that right now because we don’t have many of the household names we’ve had in past years, but by the end of the season, these current players will have that same kind of name recognition. I’m excited about this team and our expectations for them are every bit as high as they were last year.”
