Who Does Southern California Play This Weekend?

There’s still a long way to go before the next Notre Dame football game. But hold tight. We’ll try to keep you all entertained with fun little tidbits until the upcoming game with USC actually kicks off.

So what, exactly will USC be up to this upcoming weekend?  If you’re interested in watching some college football this Saturday, you might want to flip the channel to the USC game, so you can see what the Irish will be up against next time they play.

Well, unfortunately the Trojans are off the same exact week as the Fighting Irish, meaning that you won’t get to see the Trojans in action this weekend. Bummer. It’s also somewhat bad news to see that the Trojans will be rested and ready, just like the Irish.

What Did the Trojans Do Last Weekend?

The Irish will have to wait another week for their next upcoming football game, a traditional rivalry matchup with the University of Southern California. But that’s okay. Here at the Notre Dame Blog we’re using the time off to study up on the Irish and their next opponent.

What exactly did the Trojans accomplish last weekend?  Well, unfortunately for Irish fans, they were absolutely dominant, especially on defense, in defeating the Cal Bears. And Cal is no pushover team.  In fact, before the season began it was generally considered a good bet that Cal would win the Pac-10. Anyways, USC beat the Golden Bears 30-3 in Berkeley in one of their most impressive wins of the season. The good news might just be that the Trojans now have to stop their momentum with a bye week.

Looking at the Trojans

Know your enemy. While the Notre Dame forgets who said this classic line fist (was it Mr. Miyaggi from Karate Kid?) we know the truth of it well enough. You’ve got to understand your opponent before you can master him. You’ve got to do your homework before you can ace your exam. The principle is sound. So let’s get a closer look at the Trojans, who will face the Irish in their next game after the bye week.

The USC Trojans began the season with a huge home game victory over an over-matched San Jose State. Typically these big powerhouse schools throw an easy opponent at themselves the first week, and that’s what the Trojans did. They won a close one against Ohio State, and lost a huge upset versus Washington. After the wake-up call the Trojans beat Washington State soundly and then beat up on a good Cal team.

Just How Good Was Clausen-Tate Against Washington?

We all saw the game last weekend-well, hopefully we all did. It was amazing. It had all the things you look for in an exciting game- a thrilling overtime finish, long bombs and play-making defenses, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish ended up winning. But one part of the game was particularly awesome for Notre Dame fans: Jimmy Clausen to Golden Tate.

By the time the game was over Jimmy had racked up 422 yards and two touchdowns on 23-31 passing. Tate didn’t fare so bad either. Golden caught nine passes for 244 yard, a TD and also ran for 31 yards. One of the best things about Jimmy and Golden was the sizeable passes. There was the 67-yard TD pass from JC to GT, and then there was the 77-yarder that almost went all the way to the house. We’re all anxious to have these two players back out on the field for more highlight reel plays.

Notre Dame Beats Washington in Overtime!

Wow, what a game! We sure hope you were at Notre Dame Stadium this past weekend, because this was one for the ages!  The Notre Dame Fighting Irish won in dramatic fashion against the Washington Huskies 37-30 in overtime. The Domers have improved their overall record to 4-1. The Irish just keep winning the close ones!  According to the AP article (via SI.com), coach Charlie Weis had this to say:

”I’m just happy, really happy for these kids. They just keep fighting and fighting and fighting.”

Fighting was the name of the game. (Well, these are FIGHTING Irish, aren’t they?) Notre Dame had to make some huge plays to insure their victory, and the defense was as much a part of the win as the Golden Tate-Jimmy Clausen air attack. Notre Dame-Washington Preview

You can find all sorts of game previews all over the internet, but the ones you get at UND.com are always the best.  So in the spirit of keeping some tradition around here, let’s give you guys a link to the UND.com game preview for the October 3 matchup between UND and U-Dub.

Some of the notes include:

  • The Irish are completely dominating the Washington Huskies in the overall series matchup. In fact, they’re 7-0 all-time against Washington.
  • In years’ past this matchup has been somewhat testy, what with Charlie Weis and Tyrone Willingham rivalry getting some media coverage. This time around there are fewer storylines.
  • Washington is coming into the game with a lot of momentum, believing that they can beat anyone after that thrilling win over USC.
